ISO 50001 and Digitalization: How Business Intelligence (BI) can Enhance Energy Efficiency in the Metal Industry

Within the European regulatory framework aimed at achieving a net-zero emissions target, energy efficiency plays a pivotal role, with the ISO 50001 standard being particularly significant. Effective energy management enables companies to consistently monitor and improve their energy performance, reduce emissions, and enhance their competitive position. The green and digital transitions must work together to drive these goals forward. Through IoT sensors, smart meters, and AI-powered analytics, companies have access to vast amounts of data. The ability to convert this data into actionable insights is therefore crucial. Business Intelligence (BI) offers a powerful suite of tools to transform energy data into strategic assets. By integrating advanced analytics with data visualization, BI supports organizations in making informed decisions, optimizing operations, identifying areas for improvement, and enhancing overall energy efficiency.

Studio Ing. Marini has developed BI applications based on Tableau technology, providing a set of cloud-based dashboards designed to support the implementation of ISO 50001. From consumption tracking to interactive EnPI analytics dashboards, these tools enable organizations to make data-driven decisions for maintenance, operations, and CAPEX investments in energy efficiency initiatives.

The paper illustrates how an industrial company can effectively monitor its energy performance, identify energy conservation opportunities, and report ESG indicators with accuracy and efficiency, using a set of BI dashboards to support the ISO 50001 continuous improvement process. A case study in the metal sector demonstrates how BI has enabled the faster development of ISO 50001, offering several advantages, including reduced documentation, lower costs, and improved employee engagement.
