Abstract:
The Energy Efficiency Directive (EU/2023/179) establishes the Energy Efficiency First principle as a legally binding cornerstone of EU energy policy. Its implementation relies on structured energy management practices capable of continuously improving an organization’s energy performance. ISO 50001 – Energy Management Systems – provides a robust framework to support this objective. Despite its proven effectiveness, the standard is still applied by a relatively limited number of organizations. However, this scenario is expected to evolve rapidly, as the Directive introduces mandatory requirements for companies with annual consumption exceeding 85 TJ and imposes ambitious reduction targets.
While large organizations are generally equipped to adopt systematic approaches, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) often face structural and resource-related barriers. The paper presents the methodology developed by AssoEGE, the Italian association of certified energy experts, to promote ISO 50001 adoption among SMEs, built around five strategic levers: economic profitability, regulatory compliance, ESG rating enhancement, corporate reputation, and digital transition.
