Energy Transition of the Building Stock – Slovak Experiences

A new Directive no. 2018/844/EU has been implemented in Slovakia since 1 st January 2021, that aims to reduce the energy consumption and the dependence of the European Union member states on primary energy sources. New form of directive introduces the definition on nearly zero energy buildings, and the global indicator for total energy use in buildings was changed to primary energy use, which also altered the EPC template. The decree sets out a gradual tightening of the minimum requirements since 2021. Simultaneously, the directive aims to promote the use of renewable energy sources to cover the energy consumption and reduce the harmful CO 2 emissions, that impact the environment. More than 900 000 family houses were built in Slovakia, about 100 000 of which was built in the 1950s to 1970s. These houses have similar floor plans, indoor dispositions, and material design. They do not meet current thermal insulation requirements. At present, the state provides support for energy renovation of these family houses. This paper aims shows the possibilities to implementation of energy-saving measures not only for family houses, but for building stock also, to attain a nearly zero energy standard and meet the current energy standard of the 21 st century.

Speaker Bio

I am the professor assistant at Slovak university of Technology in Bratislava, Department of Buildings Services. I am the past president of AEE Slovak Student Chapter. In my work, I focus primarily on geothermal energy and heat recovery system from wastewater produced by swimming pools. However, I am also involved in other projects that are related to the energy efficiency of buildings and nearly zero energy buildings. During the past years, together with my colleagues, I was part of a project of typical family houses in Slovakia renovation. Novadays I am the member of international project SHERLOCK.
