Track A: Energy Management

Session A1: The Role of Artificial Intelligence in Energy Management

April 23, 2025 | 2:30 pm - 3:00 pm

Application of AI in Fault Detection and Diagnostics – Application results from a Large Mixed Use Commercial Buildings in Toronto Canada

While Fault Detection and Diagnostics has shown to help identify operational Energy reduction opportunities in Large Buildings. It also has some drawbacks namely

– Addressing issues of False positives,

– The FDD Software Platform often requires understanding Sophisticated Programming language, to input the fault rules. Therefore there is a lot of dependence on the software vendors by the Energy Manager of the facility

– FDD is often tied to a BAS and Facilities that does not have a BAS, an FDD may not be the easily implementable as most FDD platform captures data from the BAS (Building Automation System)

– Often it is hard to sell FDD to Facilities, as the system does not guarantee a return on investment.

– FDD is not very popular in smaller facilities dues to lack of flexibility.

Reipower AI is a platform which address some of the above features. It uses Several AI Algorithm including large language models. It can be used both in an online mode as well as offline mode. The presentation is a case study of how Rei power AI identifies faults and anomalies for a large mixed use commercial Facility. The advantage of the Artificial intelligence based FDD platform over a traditional rule based FDD is discussed.
